The original RTC Lab, formerly known as the VoIP Lab, was built as the class project of the VoIP Basics class (ITM546), in the Spring of 2004. It consisted of two test beds deployed on rolling carts. A key requirement of the design of both test beds was that activities in the lab should not impact IIT's production voice and data networks.

The test beds allowed the students to observe and test basic VoIP functions and features. A subjective study of the effects of a "ping attack" on the Cisco Test Bed demonstrated the robustness of the system. Telephone service quality was not noticeably impaired, while the round trip delay of the data packets increased considerably.

Students in the previous summer's class had studied different methods for integrating the voice and data networks of Rice Campus. Their class project, a feasibility study examining the pros and cons of different architectures, was intended to be an aid for a future real-world integration.

During the Summer of 2004 through the summer of 2005 the current VoIP Lab was built out substantially. Switches, routers and hubs were added to the common-equipment racks to enable a variety of configurations. The lab now contains over 30 test positions and several test bed configurations. Current projects reflect the work of the telecommunications classes offered by the ITM program and the ongoing use of the lab within those courses.
